E-scooters are much less sustainable than thought

You can find e-scooters on almost every corner, especially in big cities. For some people, they are an eyesore in the cityscape. For others, they are considered a practical and alternative means of transport. E-scooters are much less sustainable than expected.

Now they have become a part of everyday life and in big cities you can find them on every corner: e-scooters. Electric scooters have also become a real alternative in this country in recent years. But are e-scooters really as sustainable as many manufacturers claim?

For example, the Provider Tier says that all trips are compensated. As of 2020, the company even refers to itself as climate neutral. But appearances are obviously deceiving. At least these are the results of numerous studies. Accordingly, e-scooters are actually exacerbating the climate crisis instead of permanently contributing.

E-scooters emit more greenhouse gases than they avoid

Previous studies mostly dealt with emissions: from production to operation to disposal of the e-scooter. Studies from 2019 for example, it suggests that electric mini scooters emit around 202 grams of CO2 per mile (about 1.06 kilometers).

That’s more emissions than an e-moped (119 grams) or a diesel bus per passenger (82 grams), but less than car sharing (415 grams). Investigation from 2020 it goes even further. Accordingly, e-scooters emit 13,000 tons more greenhouse gases than if they did not exist at all.

The reason for this is that it often covers routes that are normally used by public transport. Also studies from Zurich underlines the problem. According to this, scooters emit an average of 51 grams more per kilometer than the means of transport that users would choose instead.

The problems in this industry are multifaceted

However, the reasons are different. This includes, for example, the short lifespan of e-scooters. As many sellers flocked to the market at once, they used older and already available models. As a result, many scooters ended up in landfills after a short period of time.

But that will soon change. Some of the providers are developing new models under their own brand that are supposed to be significantly more durable. Another problem is the one-sided availability so far. Because there are countless e-scooters available in big cities. But the network is sparse in the area.

Especially when it comes to network expansion, a rethink could make e-scooters more sustainable. In rural areas, electric scooters could be an alternative to driving a car. However, for many providers, e-scooter stations on Lang do not yet appear to be profitable.
